Phase 7 is a modern recreation of the classic six-operator FM experience. It is built for the clear bodies, hard transients, metallic color, and touch-responsive harmonic motion that made digital synthesis feel like a new instrument rather than another version of an analog one.
When the Yamaha DX7 arrived in 1983, its sound stood apart from the subtractive instruments around it. Electric pianos could move from glass to bark under the fingers. Bells, basses, mallets, brass-like stacks, and metallic percussion brought a new vocabulary into popular music, and that vocabulary still shapes electronic production today.
The compatibility collection recreates the 64 voices in the Mark I ROM 1A and 1B banks as native Phase 7 parameters. Keeping the stored 0-99 values intact makes the bank useful for direct engine comparisons as well as musical production.
Factory voices stay separate from the General performance setup. Switching banks or patches preserves polyphony, mono and legato behavior, portamento, unison, tuning, bend, and output settings while the full state remains shareable in the URL.
This is a tribute to an era-defining instrument and a working synthesizer in its own right. The aim is not to freeze the 1980s. It is to keep the character and expressive range of classic FM open to new records.
